Athens State Botanical Gardens | Megan and Colby's Proposal | Athens Engagement

Megan is one of my oldest and best friends, I've known her since we were little, so getting to capture her proposal was so special at the Athens Botanical Gardens! I am so happy for her and Colby, and I can't wait for them to be married! Colby and I have planning for awhile, and trying to keep it a surprise for Megan. I told Megan I bought a new lens and wanted to practice with it some, (no new lens ;) ) and that's how I got her in front of my camera. I'm so glad we pulled it off, and were able to surprise her! I cannot wait for this wedding!

For every surprise proposal I ask both the bride and groom to each write when they knew they would marry each other. Here are their answers...

Megan's reply,

I realized Colby was the one I wanted to marry when I realized every desire I had in my heart for my husband, the Lord was fulfilling through Colby. My number one desire in a husband is for him to love Jesus Christ more than he will ever love me or anything else in this life. Colby displays this love by the grace of God. His first love is Jesus, and he seeks him through daily study of the Bible and through prayer. I also desire a husband who will love me and serve me like Christ loves and serves the Church. Jesus laid his life down for the Church, and I want a husband who is willing to lay down his life for me. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). Colby truly embodies this. He is always thinking of how he can love me better and serve me more.

Since I was a little girl I have adored children and have been so excited to have children when that perfect time came one day. I long for a husband who wants several children and who is passionate about kids. I am so thankful that Colby adores children and would love to have many children (biological and adopted). I have often heard the saying that you should never marry a man unless you would like to have a son just like him. I would love nothing more than to have a precious son just like Colby May!

One of the strongest convictions the Lord has given me is my desire to seek radical purity. I have desired to remain sexually pure for my husband until my wedding night since I was a young girl. I knew it was imperative for any man who I dated to have the same convictions in order to fulfill this vow I had made to the Lord. Colby displays his love for the Lord and for me so beautifully by seeking radical purity. He told me this the first month we were dating when he gave me a purity cross necklace, and I will never forget it. He said, "Lusting is taking and loving is giving. I don't want to ever take anything away from you, Megan. I want to protect you and your purity." Through God's grace the Lord has allowed us to remain pure and the result is that I feel so safe, protected, and loved when I am with Colby.

Colby is not perfect and he never will be, but through the blood Christ shed for us on the cross, he is a redeemed son of God who is growing daily into the likeness of Jesus Christ! Glory to God!! These are just a few of the many qualities I prayed for and desired my future husband to possess. When I saw all of these attributes in Colby, I had no doubt in my mind that the Lord had made Colby for me to become my husband. I am overwhelmed with thankfulness to the Lord for giving me the desires of my heart in a husband. I feel so loved by God that he listened to my years of praying and crying out to him for a Godly husband. He has exceeded my expectations once again. "Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4).

**For all you single ladies who are dreaming of a Godly man to sweep you off your feet, keep seeking the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. As you seek Jesus first, he will transform you into his likeness, and he will prepare you for the wonderful man he has for you to marry. "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these other things will be added to you" (Matthew 6:33). Wait on God's perfect timing. The Lord is so faithful, and it will be so worth the wait!!

Colby's reply,

"The first time I laid my eyes upon Megan, I knew that she was a special girl. We did not talk for months after we first met because it was not the Lord’s timing. So about year later, she called me and ended up praying for me over the phone. I knew right then that I was going to marry her. The one thing I was looking for in a woman was that she loves and serves God more than anything else in this world. I knew that if I wanted to date and pursue a girl towards marriage that she needed to be serving God wholeheartedly. By the power of Megan's prayer and her evident faithfulness to Christ, I knew that she was the one that I was supposed to be with for the rest of my life.

Of course, her beauty and looks helped the process of me wanting to marry her, but the number one aspect that made me want to marry her was her love for Jesus Christ. “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).  Because of Christ's love in her, she was able to patiently love me in the midst of the adversity I was going through with baseball. I really saw that Megan was able to lean on Christ for her strength during one of the most challenging times in my life. This is vital because in marriage there will be many tough times and unless we have the Lord to sustain us, we will never survive. Jesus Christ must be the solid foundation in which we build our lives and marriage in order for us to thrive in the midst of the challenges of this life.

I also love that Megan is always so encouraging no matter what she is going through that day. It is important to have a woman of God like this because if I went home to a wife who was always negative, then it would bring me down. There is enough negativity in the world, and I need my home to be a positive and uplifting environment. “It is better to live on the corner of a roof than to share a house with a quarrelsome wife” (Proverbs 21:9).

Megan is the most amazing woman in the whole world, and I’m so thankful the Lord put her in my life. It’s humbling to know that I have found a Proverbs 31 wife. Proverbs 31:10 says, “finding your wife is far more precious than a jewel,” and that clearly depicts how I feel about Megan because she is better than anything I’ve ever had! I’m just so thankful that the Bible proves so true in her life. She has walked the life of Christ for so long that I have seen Jesus and his power so clearly through her. Megan has helped me grow so much closer to the Lord. I know this is crucial in marriage because we’re supposed to be holding one another accountable and building each other up but also leading each other to the Kingdom of God as one. I feel confident that Megan is the one that I can trust to do this in my life, and I desire to lead her closer to the Lord daily. Marriage is ultimately about pushing one another closer to God and becoming a unified vessel for Him to use. The Lord uses marriage to refine and purify us in order to prepare us to become the Bride of Christ.

I am also thankful the proposal went the way it did because the rain that poured while I was out there waiting for my beautiful fiancée symbolized many things that have gone on in our relationship. We've had a lot of areas in our relationship that we needed to work on, and we have been through a lot of adversity together over the years. However, we have persevered and stayed together through the good times and bad. The rain symbolizes that sometimes during the rainy seasons in life we must have faith to know that God holds our future in his hands. If we persevere and keep seeking the Lord then he promises there will be beautiful days ahead for each of us. In our relationship we’ve always pressed on because we know that when the rain falls there is always sunshine in the future because we have the promise that our heavenly Father is leading us both into eternity and that he is going to use us to fulfill His plan that he has for our lives.
